Airole & the Roya valley

Airole, a village beside the Roya river

Airole sits above the Roya river, where the Ligurian hills meet the southern Alps. The historic centre is a weave of stone houses, lanes and steps. The village square is small enough to bump into familiar faces, with room to sit outside for a coffee or a meal.

The village is a practical place to stay, with shops for everyday essentials, places to eat and enjoy an aperitivo, and a pharmacy. Its scale is quite different from the coast: within a few minutes on foot, the village centre is behind you and the valley opens up ahead.

The square and the lanes

Most roads, paths and lanes through Airole lead to the piazza. Here you will find the two cafés, Happy Days Bar and Bar da Carletta, the grocery shop Alimentari da Deborah and the restaurant U Veciu Defisiu. The surrounding lanes are narrow, and cars stay outside the historic centre. Exploring on foot is easy, though steps and changes in height are part of the village.

The square is a very short walk from Airole Panorama. Our local addresses are listed below, with a map to help you find them. Opening hours can change: check with the business itself, or follow the rhythm of the village.

At the edge of the village

The Roya flows below Airole. Roads follow the valley south towards Ventimiglia and inland towards the mountain villages. Walking paths start around the village, with views of the river and hillsides. Before setting out, check the current condition of the paths and the weather.
